De-clutter your way to organization

too much stuff

De-cluttering your home will result in a more organized home.  We all have too much stuff.  Even the professional organizer has too much stuff!  I’m constantly de-cluttering and putting things back where they belong to maintain an organized home.

Just imagine if we pared down our belongings by a third!

  1. We will have less to maintain.
  2. We will have more freedom.
  3. We will have empty spaces thus more storage.
  4. We will be able to find things.
  5. We will love coming home to a clutter and chaos free space.

Grab a couple containers and choose one room to de-clutter today.  It doesn’t matter what room you choose just make a decision.  Set a timer for 30 minutes and quickly go through the room looking for items to donate and trash.  If the room has drawers, shelves, or a closet, check those areas also.

I bet you will fill at least one container in 30 minutes.  Don’t agonize over your decisions, do it quickly.

Put the donation containers in your car and drop them off next time you are near your favorite charity.

How many containers did you fill?  Congratulations!!

What’s in your wallet?

wallet
Have you ever had your wallet or purse stolen?  If this has happened to you, you know it’s more than an inconvenience.

Your first thought, after you get over the shock is, “oh my gosh, all my credit cards were in there!”  How many of us remember our credit card account numbers, which cards we own and where to find their information?

Even though your wallet may never be stolen, a few minutes of preparation will save you a lot of stress and anxiety if it does.

Remove all your credit cards, library card, drivers license and other important cards from you wallet.  Photocopy the front side of the cards on one sheet of paper, if they fit.  Flip the cards over in the copy machine and photocopy the backs on the reverse side of the paper.  Do this every time you receive a new credit card or i.d.

Now you have all the important information and can easily make the phone calls to cancel the cards. File the photocopies in a safe place; possibly your credit card file folder.

One more tip…..do not carry your social security card in your wallet.  Leave it at home and memorize the number.  You do not want that card stolen.  We have learned from experience!

Pantry Organization to Simplify Meal Preparation

Find the ingredients you need to prepare dinner in a snap with an organized pantry!  Imagine how much time you will save.

There are 5 steps to organizing your pantry (or food cabinets).

1. Remove out dated and expired food.  Toss it, even though it seems like a waste, but if it is way past it’s expiration date it should go.  Food that has recently expired could be added to you meals in the next week or so.  If you find you don’t end up eating it sooner than later, let it go.  Learn from you mistakes and move on.  Don’t over buy and be careful if you shop at food warehouse clubs like Sam’s.  I have removed many trash bags of expired food from client’s homes; you aren’t the only one who has made the mistake.   Sort through your pantry twice a year to check for food that will be expiring soon.

2. Group food together in categories and shelve them in these categories.  Here are some category examples: canned vegetables, canned fruit, beverage items, breakfast items, condiments, oils, spices, baking items, rice/pasta, and snack food.

3. Use containers for spices or snack food.  I use containers to loosely alphabetize my spices.  Crazy?  Maybe but it does save time:)  Containers provide a home for small snack items.

4. Freshen up the shelves by wiping them down.  Wow, doesn’t that feel great!

5. Label shelves if it helps you maintain the organization.  Family members will know exactly where food items belong after using them or after grocery shopping.

Spend 30 minutes organizing a shelf in your pantry today.

A simple solution for paper piles

paper-inbox

Do your papers need a home?

A command center is a simple system and solution for those paper piles.  This system will help you keep your office desk or your kitchen counter and table surfaces free of paper clutter.  Set one up in your home by following the instructions in this post and you will have the system up and running in no time.

There are two parts to the command center: The Desk Top File Box and The Tickler File.

Part One

The Desk Top File Box:

This file box will hold approximately 6-8 hanging folders.  Place it in a convenient area, preferably close to where you process your papers and mail.  For example: your kitchen counter or your office desk.

Sort your current pile of papers and mail.  Separate mail into categories according to the action that is needed.  Label the hanging folders in your desk top file box with the action needed and place the papers in those folders.

Some examples:

  • File—papers that need to be archived in a file cabinet or box.  File these papers when this folder is full.
  • Enter into computer—data entry, Quickbooks, ect.
  • To order—items you want to order off the internet or by phone.
  • Pending—when you are waiting for someone to get back to you.
  • Errands—a list of errands.
  • To call—return calls you need to make.
  • To write—letters or emails that need to be written.

Other papers may need to be referenced frequently.  Those papers will also need a home in labeled hanging files.

Some examples:

  • Coupons/Menus—restaurant take-out menus and coupons.
  • Receipts—file your debit and credit card receipts and other store receipts. You will easily find them if you need to return something.  Purge receipts on a monthly basis.
  • Diet/Exercise—healthy menus and class schedules for the gym.
  • Home/Work—papers that need to go back and forth from office to work.
  • School—class lists and teacher information for each school your children attend.
  • Projects—papers you have related to a work project, a home project or a big ticket item purchase (home or car).
  • P/T—exercises your physical therapist wants you to do.
  • Family/Other associates—Label a file folder with the name of each person in your household and the names of people you deal with on a regular basis(office assistant, boss, tutor). Use these folders to hold papers that refer to their activities and items that need to be discussed with them.

Part Two

The Tickler File:

The tickler file will reside in the front half of your desk top file box. The numbered tabs correspond to the days of the month.  There are also labeled tabs for each month of the year.

Use the tickler file for your papers that need to be completed by a certain date or are date specific.

Some examples:

  • Concert tickets
  • Sporting event tickets
  • A greeting card you purchased for a friend’s birthday
  • Bills
  • Invitations
  • Forms for a doctor appointment
  • Notes for a meeting

Determine when these papers need to be looked at again or acted upon and file accordingly.  If a bill is due on the 10th and you need to mail it, file it in front of the 5th tab. When a paper needs to be acted on in a future month, file it in front of that month’s tab. These papers will no longer be misplaced or clutter up your surfaces.

This system will work beautifully if you make it a habit to check your tickler file and your active files on a daily basis.  File papers in the system and remove papers as needed.  You may need to post reminders in your calendar or on sticky notes around your home/office to check Command Center, until it becomes a habit.

I find you will be more likely to use the command center if you place it in a visible location, not hidden in a cabinet.

Do you have papers that need shredding?  Click here for a coupon for free shredding at Office Depot through April 16, 2013.

Where will you put your command center?

Organizing tips for baking Christmas cookies

Do you love to make cookies and other baked goods, especially at Christmas time?  I do too.  Sometimes it feels like more work than fun.  Here are some tips to help you stay organized and enjoy the task with your family.

  • Choose recipes; ask your family for their favorites and add your favorite.
  • Do you have all the ingredients?
  • Make a grocery list of items you need.
  • Block off some time on your schedule.  If you want help, block off a day when family or friends are available.
  • Have a cookie swap with friends, many hands make light work!
  • Clear off your counters and table to make space for rolling cookies and cookies that need to cool.
  • Assemble containers for storing cookies.
  • Assemble ingredients, tools and recipes.
  • Fill the sink with soapy water and clean as you bake instead of having one huge pile of dirty dishes when you finish baking.
  • Enjoy!  Your kitchen probably smells terrific!

What cookies are your favorites?

Eliminate those pesky paper piles

Do you wish you could magically make those paper piles disappear?  I have a solution for your paper pain.  I’m teaching a new teleclass (a class over the phone).  It’s on December 12th and will be recorded if you can’t listen in that day.

I hope you join me so you can learn how to make decisions about your papers, where to put your  papers so you can find them quickly and easily, and how to keep those piles from returning.

More information here.
